Loooove this topic! I mostly agree with you OP (and thanks for raising this!), but I think it's not truly submissive. Tldr hozier’s a massive ass sub in dinner & diatribes and, like you say, “your man” makes use of the possessive pronoun, suggesting ownership which once again diminishes hozier’s role. So, the more submissive reading would be totally conducive with the power play in the rest of the song. and then, again, “you’d do to me,” puts them in a position of power as they’re the subject of the phrase, whereas hozier is diminished to a passive role. One of my points was about dinner & diatribes, specifically with the line, “i’d answer for hell if you’d tell me what you’d do to me tonight.” here, the agency is very much in the subject’s hands the very fact that they have that knowledge over him denotes that they have more power, implying that hozier’s the submissive one. i did an entire essay ages ago on agency in hozier’s lyrics lmao, and how he gives agency to women in a way that’s unusual in western 21st century pop music. That’s actually a really interesting interpretation, i’d never thought of it that way before but it actually makes total sense. I can't believe I just wrote two entire paragraphs about three words.

So he could mean "I am the man, I am the one who's supposed to wear the pants in this relationship, so tell me now". And it appears only in the second chorus, after the narrator starts losing patience : "the evening is slowing". A bit like in "No plan" : "I'll be your man if you have love to get done" But it is interesting to note that "tell your man" is the only occurrence of gendered language in the song and it is used to explicitly indicate a male narrator. He could mean "I am your man, you are the possessor and I am the possessed, please tell me". The narrator could be begging or he could be commanding. My interpretation is that this line feels so hot because it is not clear whether it is meant to be dominant or submissive.

The expression "your man" is a euphemism for "your (male) romantic/sexual partner" which makes "tell your man" considerably more sexually charged than just "tell me".īut there is more to it. I have been reading the old thread on which people analysed Hozier's dirtiest lyrics and I have been wondering why this line in Dinner & Diatribes has such an effect on so many people.Īt first it appears that the narrator adds "Tell your man" after "tell me" as a reminder of the special relationship between him and his partner : "You can tell me everything because I am not anyone, I am not one of those boring people in the club, I am a close person".
